India swirls with the maximum number of Hindi-speaking regions and lies fourth in the world after English, Spanish and Mandarin. Hindi literature is a pool of spectacular tales told in the most natural and creative way. Authors and contributors have flicked the world of Hindi literature with their outstanding work. In this article, we look back at a number of notable Hindi writers everyone should know about.
Sant Kabir
Kabir, popularly known as Sant for his sharp wit and literary works, was a spiritual poet from India. Kabir was the first Indian saint to carry communal harmony and disseminate it among both Hindus and Muslims through his couplets. Kabir has explicitly championed in his philosophy that life is an interplay of two spiritual doctrines, God (Parmatma) and the personal soul (Jivatma). His notable works include Kabir Bijak, Kabir Parachai, Sakhi Granth, Adi Granth (Sikh), and Kabir Granthawali.
Munshi Premchand
One of the most renowned writers in the history of Hindi-writing, Munshi Premchand was born in Uttar Pradesh on July 31 in 1880. Most of his works were either written in Urdu or Hindi. Notable works range from Godaan, Nirmala, Gaban, Kaphan, to Rangbhoomi, Sevasadan, and Mansarovar.
Amrita Pritam
Known for her extraordinary way of expressing subtle thoughts quite elegantly through essays and novels, Amrita Pritam became a standardised name in the late 20th century. Her renowned novels and stories like “Kagaj te Canvas” reached across and beyond the India-Pakistan borders.
Hindi storybooks linger in our memory long after the last page ends, and that is exactly the matter with Amrita Pritam. Her substantial career lasted for almost six decades within which she produced over a hundred books on poetry, fiction, essays, biographies, etc. Her work put her on the frontline as the best Hindi story writer. Hindi literature will undeniably celebrate some of the remarkable works that came from Amrita’s heart. Some of her beloved works are The Skeleton and That Man, Rasidi Ticket, Yaatri, In the Times of Love and Longing, and Main Tumhe Fir Milungi.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan
Father to the legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, Harivansh Rai was a figurehead of the literary movement that happened in India in the beginning of the 20th century. He was born in Prayagraj on November 27, 1907.
Important works: Madhushala, Dashdwaar Sopaan Tak, Nisha Nimantran, Do Chattenein, Milan Yamini.
Dharamvir Bharati
Dharamvir Bharati was a playwright, author and poet in India. Born in Prayagraj, on December 25, 1926, Bharati has received several honorary awards including the prestigious Padma Shri. Gunahaon Ka Devta, Sapna Abhi Bhi, Manavmulya Aur Sahitya, Gyarah Sapno Ka Desh, and Pashyanti stand out in his sea of work.
Jai Shankar Prasad
One of the most well-known Hindi authors whose significant impact is scattered all over Hindi Literature, Jai Shankar was also a prominent personality in Hindi theatre. He is one of the four heart-wearing pillars in the era of Romanticism.
His famous dramas, including Dhruvaswamini, Chandragupta, and Skandagupta, were highly applauded. Prasad’s works were written in a particular Khadi dialect that was acclaimed as the best Hindi storytelling-style for generations. His readers seem never to get enough of his writing style and only wanted more publications to appear in the public domain.
Prasad’s noteworthy work includes Aansoo, Titli, Kankal, Kamayani and Lahar.
Suryakant Tripathi
A momentous Indian essayist, poet, novelist and the figurehead of Hindi story writers today, Suryakant Tripathi was a spacious kind. He used to sketch sketches, and the assortment of his literary works is some of the best Hindi books even in contemporary India.
A documentary film was also produced by the Films Division of India under the title “Suryakant Tripathi Nirala.” This documentary dissected Suryakant’s work proficiently and gave a translucent glimpse into his lifestyle as a writer.
